Harvesters the Winner in Food Drive Contests

(for H&R Block Community Relations)

"Did you order the forklift for the food I'm bringing tomorrow?" said one associate during this year's Harvesters Food Drive, and judging by this year's contribution, he was speaking for all of H&Block. The donations overflowed 56 barrels, more than 250% of the original goal of 22 barrels, with one location contributing more than 5000 food items! H&R Block set records by collecting more than three tons of food and providing 8,143 meals.

Sandi McKenzie, Location Captain at 2300 Main, helped inspire the teams on her floor to blast through their three barrel goal with more than 19 barrels, 600% of their target. “I know this crew and competition seems to motivate them to do well. One of my goals was to bring awareness to the hunger issue and I think that was accomplished.”

The competition actually increased teamwork. “It wasn’t just one individual in a department who participated. Whole teams would go out together on lunch hours to get food. There was even cooperation across teams with one team helping transport food for another." Teams kept upping the ante until the final total was 5,240 items and $410 in cash!

April Beckwith, Location Captain at the Service Center, explained how they motivated their teams to a second great year reaching 400% of their goal with 12 barrels. "The last two years we had a great response by setting up a competition between the departments. The winning team gets their name on a plaque.”

Susan Durbian, Administrative Assistant, reports, “Karen Orosco challenged several departments to see which group could donate the most items. More than 2000 items were collected, even though some groups were in the process of moving. Harvesters was the real winner of the competition.”

Bob Bolinger, food drive coordinator, said, "I have to thank all the volunteers who put out the flyers, handed out the bags for food, and dreamed up some of the contests that made it such a big success." Bob reports, "I am truly amazed and touched by the generosity of all the buildings. In addition, associates donated $680 – each dollar of that cash can be turned into five meals by Harvesters."
